Woo, it has been far too long since I've used this, but it is time.
My first year of Graduate School has finished, and while it was incredibly stressful at times, I am glad I have come here. I have learned So much information, and gotten a great deal of experience in all areas of theatre. Now I am preparing for the summer, which looks to be even harder than the school year. I will be working for the College Light Opera Company in Falmouth Mass, on Cape Cod, as the technical director and scenic deseigner for all 9 of their musicals. 9 shows, in 9 weeks. It will be very fast paced, and push me to my limits as a technician and designer, but I look forward to the experience it gives me, and the padding in the resume. Steph has quit her job so she can come along and live on the cape with me for the summer. I know she is excited about that, and it will be nice having her close by, unlike last summer.
Next semester I am designing The Importance of Being Earnest, which should be great fun. So I think that is all there is to update about. Now I'm off to work on designing some summer shows.

New York trip, #2

So, went to New York yesterday, which was awesome.

Some interesting highlights before I get on to the shows.
Saw a SWAT team member with an M16 just outside of Grand Central Station.
Someone almost died on the train back home to New Haven.  A guy on the train saved his life.  I didn't see any of it as I was in a different car, but I thought it a suitable excuse for not moving for half an hour at 1:45 in the morning.

The first show I saw was Mary Poppins, which was Super... cali..fra.... err, nevermind.  I honestly loved it.  The acting was good, the music was fun, and the set was AMAZING.  The only major problem I had with the play was the song Temper Temper, which added nothing to show, and was more of a distraction than anything else. We got a backstage tour of the theatre, and that made it all the more interesting.  I didnt know that they created Everything specifically for the show, including the flooring. The set itself was amazing, as I have said.  Every scene had something new to discover, and though the space was limited (as I learned in the backstage tour), suprises too big to be expected never stopped (just like the items from Mary's bag). And the SPECTACLE! There were some great illusions used, and when Mary flew into the audience at the end of the show, it left all the techies speechless.  (Especially since there was no visible rigging system! It was there, it just wasn't directly over her).  The play wasn't simply the movie, as it followed the books (or so they said, I have not read the books), but it was enjoyable. Overall, I recommend it to everyone!

The second show we saw was Pirates of Penzance at the NYOpera.  This is the first major production of a show I was already very familiar with.  The show itself was alright.  I thought it lost a great deal being in such a large space with sucha  HUGE cast (there were 21 maidens! and more police and pirates than that! Needless to say, it was large).  The set was blah.  It had no real significance for the piece, and felt choppy, without direction.  The music was the best part of the show, as they were all great singers...
So my honest opinion? I liked our version MUCH better.  Why? Intimate, fully developed, Much better choreography, better set, and I liked Will's General, Rex's Pirate King, Blake's ... yeah, well I liked our Actors much better than the trained singers of this show.  I know, I am biased based on the fact that I was In that show, but I still believe it is true. There was a lot of humor missed and lines blown over because they didn't catch the significance that was written into it. Anyways, it was only 16 bucks for the day of student tickets.  Go see that too, if you only want to spend 16 bucks.

So after another good trip, some new experiences (dying people, semi-automatic rifles, a trip to a VERY expensive restaurant with the aid of a gift certificate, my first NYC subway trip) I have returned even more excited about theatre and what future holds for me.  Yay for inspiration

Funny news story

Am busy wasting time and found this.  Its humorous!

The Atlantic Theater in the Jacksonville, Fla., suburb of Atlantic Beach planned to stage several dramas this winter, including Eve Ensler's "The Vagina Monologues," but following an undisclosed number of complaints from parents who said they were uncomfortable seeing that title, management changed its marquee to "The Hoohaa Monologues." (The change lasted one day, until management realized it was barred by contract from calling the play by another name.) [WJXT-TV (Jacksonville), 2-6-07, 2-8-07]

About time I wrote!

I thought I would update. I dont know who reads this, but I feel like if you do, you obviously care enough to know about how I am doing. And that makes me feel special.

Second semester is now half over, and it is going well.  Ive gotten some good theatre experience, and am enjoying the classes (not the work so much).  Graduate school can be rather intense, but I can see the good it is doing.  Im getting more confident in drafting, drawing, autocad, and welding. Though I am still no fan of writing papers. I wrote a big paper on A Moon for the Misbegotten by Eugene O'Neill about the relationships between Hogan, Jim, and Josie, focusing mainly on their real world inspirations and... well blah blah blah.. It was interesting, and I plan on seeing it in NYC next month to actually see the play that has been happening in my mind so much lately. Am currently writing a paper on Sylvia by AR Gurney.  Funny funny!
Lets see, what else is new.  Went to NYC for the first time last month.  I loved it! Saw Avenue Q (Hilarious show!) and The Little Dog Laughed (Good acting, poor script).  Steph and I are going on Wednesday to see Mary Poppins (and get a backstage tour) and probably see Pirates of Penzance at the NYC Opera! I am VERY excited!
The weather is weird up here.  It is currently snowing.  The snow from the previous storm had almost dissapeared, and then friday night the snow returned. 8 Inches in one night.  Couldn't open my front door until I took the screen out of it and used a broom. (I dont have a snow shovel, and plan on Not buying one!) And now it has snowed about 2 inches tonight. Out of nowhere! Weird.
I have become involved in the church we've been attending, which is Great! We helped out with this thing called Teen Involvement, which is kinda like this church talent competition where a bunch of churches come together and get to do different churchy things.  Steph and I directed dramas (I did Junior High, she did High School) and our groups won, which was exciting for the youth.  I like being involved at church again, it is a part of me I really missed.
Summer is coming, and I have some options... I am being considered (which means I almost have an offer) from two places... The place I worked last summer wants me back (I think they pay a little more every year you return...) and they might be offering me a design, which would be awesome. But there is this place in Pennsylvania, its like a theatre camp for talented high school students, and they have been talking about me being a TD there for 6 weeks, and designing a show.  Im not really sure what all it entails, but it seems interesting (and the TD credit would be good, as would a design, for the show is not just for the camp, it is an actual production).  Im leaning to that one, but we will see. If I do that one I might go to England for a week with Steph at the beginning of summer.  Im not sure though.
Well I guess that is all thats been happening to me.  If you want some pictures of shows I've been working on, just ask and I can e-mail some to you!
